Leica GS11 RTK Setup: NTRIP in Leica X-PAD

Connect the Leica GS11 I and GS11 T to RTKdata NTRIP in Leica X-PAD: receiver 4G or controller internet, port 2101, mountpoint AUTO and the RTK Fixed check.

The Leica GS11 I and GS11 T are GNSS receivers by Leica Geosystems (Hexagon) with tilt compensation, set up in Leica X-PAD on an Android smartphone or tablet or on the Leica CSX8 field tablet. For a Leica GS11 RTK setup with RTKdata NTRIP, open Settings > GNSS & Total stations > Add > GNSS Receiver (GNSS) in X-PAD, set Mode to GNSS Rover, choose Internal GPRS (receiver) (mobile data through the optional 4G modem in the GS11) or External GPRS (controller) (internet from the controller) on the RTK page, and on the RTK GPRS page add your own NTRIP server with the RTKdata host for your region in IP (rtk.rtkdata.com for North America, eu.rtkdata.com for Europe or aus.rtkdata.com for Australia), 2101 in Port, UserID and Password from your RTK credentials, and AUTO in Mountpoint. Then select the profile under Instruments, tap Current, start the connection with GNSS Status > Tools > Connect GPRS and check that the GPS Status page shows RTK Fixed.

The menu names on this page follow the X-PAD online help by GeoMax (X-PAD Ultimate, Working version, retrieved September 2026), because Leica X-PAD builds on the X-PAD technology used with GeoMax receivers. Leica writes that "Leica X-PAD builds on X-PAD technology trusted by GeoMax users", and Hexagon writes: "If you use X-PAD with GeoMax equipment today, the way you work stays the same." A Leica X-PAD manual with GS11 screens is not published, so single labels can differ on your controller.

Leica offers the GS11 in two variants. The GS11 I has dual cameras for visual surveying in X-PAD, plus tilt compensation and laser measurement. The GS11 T has tilt compensation but no imaging capabilities. For further configurations, Leica refers to the GS11 data sheet. The steps below do not use the cameras or the laser, so we conclude that the NTRIP setup is the same for both variants; Leica has not published setup steps per variant.

These are the values you enter in X-PAD, and the field names in bold match the X-PAD help. Choose the server closest to your work area. All three servers share the same base station network; the difference is routing latency, see NTRIP Server Settings.

Requirements

  • Leica GS11 I or GS11 T with a clear view of the sky

  • Leica X-PAD, activated, with a license that includes GNSS. The X-PAD help describes the first activation as an online step ("An internet connection is required") with an Entitlement ID. A US dealer lists Leica X-PAD in several license options, so check with your Leica dealer which one includes GNSS.

  • An Android smartphone or tablet, or the Leica CSX8 field tablet, running X-PAD

  • Internet for the corrections: either the 4G modem of the GS11 (Hexagon lists the GS11 "with 4G and UHF options"; the SIM type is not published), or mobile data or a hotspot on the controller

  • RTKdata account with active RTK credentials (username starts with rtk)

  • RTKdata coverage at your site: check the coverage map before you go out

How do you set up NTRIP on the Leica GS11 in Leica X-PAD?

In Leica X-PAD, create a GNSS Receiver (GNSS) profile with Mode set to GNSS Rover, select the GS11 on the Device page, choose the internet route on the RTK page, add your own NTRIP server for RTKdata with AUTO as mountpoint on the RTK GPRS page, make the profile Current under Instruments and start the connection with Connect GPRS once the receiver has a position.

1

Create the instrument profile

  1. Tap Settings > GNSS & Total stations > Add and select GNSS Receiver (GNSS).

  2. On the Profile page, enter a Profile name, for example RTKdata.

  3. Set Mode to GNSS Rover.

  4. Select your receiver under Brand and Model. Leica has not published how the GS11 appears in these lists, so this page does not name an entry.

2

Select the GS11 on the Device page

On the Device page, select the GS11 under Device, which is the Bluetooth device X-PAD connects to. If the GS11 is not in the list, tap Add device to start a Bluetooth search.

3

Choose the internet route on the RTK page

Select one of the two options for NTRIP:

  • Internal GPRS (receiver): the X-PAD help describes it as "use of internal GPRS modem of receiver". Use it for a GS11 with the 4G option and mobile data in the receiver.

  • External GPRS (controller): "use of the GPRS modem of the device (controller) or the Internet connection of the controller". Use it for internet from the CSX8, a phone or a tablet.

Do not select PPP (Precise Point Positioning). According to the X-PAD help, this mode needs a separate PPP license, and it does not use the RTKdata NTRIP stream. None, Internal radio and External radio do not use NTRIP either.

4

Set the mobile provider (Internal GPRS only)

Skip this step with External GPRS (controller). The X-PAD help shows the Provider field on the RTK GPRS page only for internal GPRS, which it describes as a "SIM card inside the GNSS receiver".

  1. In Provider, select your mobile provider, or define a new one with Name, APN Server, and User ID and Password if your provider requires them.

  2. Enter the PIN of the SIM card, if it has one.

  3. Tap Accept.

5

Add your own NTRIP server for RTKdata

  1. On the RTK GPRS page, use the Server type NTRIP, not CSD (Direct call).

  2. Open the Server drop-down, tap NTRIP servers... and then + Add.

  3. Name: RTKdata.

  4. Mode: NTRIP, not Point-to-Point.

  5. IP: the host for your region, for example eu.rtkdata.com. If X-PAD rejects it or does not connect, use the IP fallback, see If the hostname does not connect below.

  6. Port: 2101.

  7. UserID and Password: from RTK Credentials. Both are case sensitive.

  8. Tap Accept, go back to RTK GPRS and select RTKdata in Server.

The field list comes from the X-PAD help. NTRIP servers..., + Add and Point-to-Point come from a 2021 X-PAD getting started guide by the US dealer iGage, written for iGage receivers. Do not overwrite an NTRIP server that X-PAD already lists, see Can I edit a preinstalled NTRIP server in X-PAD instead of adding RTKdata? below.

6

Set the mountpoint and the data format

  1. Mountpoint: type AUTO in capitals. The X-PAD help allows both ways: "Type in the name or select from a list". To pick it from the list, tap the arrow > next to Mountpoint, as the iGage guide shows it, tap Refresh to download the list and select AUTO.

  2. Format Data: select the RTCM 3 MSM option. The X-PAD help says: "For GNSS receiver with multi-constellation it is recommended to work with RTCM3 MSM format." The exact option label for the GS11 is not published.

  3. RTCM3.1 messages: leave it off. RTKdata sends no RTCM 3.1 transformation messages, see Which coordinate system should you use with AUTO in X-PAD? below.

7

Set satellites and antenna, then accept

  1. On the Parameters page, turn on Use GLONASS, Use GALILEO and Use BEIDOU. The RTKdata stream carries MSM4 messages for these constellations.

  2. On the Antenna page, set Model and Height, and Additional offset if you use one.

  3. Tap Accept. If X-PAD asks whether to configure the receiver, tap Yes, as the iGage guide describes.

8

Make the profile Current

On the Instruments page, select the profile and tap Current. The X-PAD help: "The selected profile becomes the active profile to use." A saved profile that is not Current is not used.

9

Wait for a position, then Connect GPRS

  1. Stay outside with open sky until the receiver tracks satellites and shows a position of its own: Autonomous under Position on the GPS Status page.

  2. Open GNSS Status, tap Tools and then Connect GPRS. The X-PAD help describes this command for a receiver "configured as network rover", and a long tap on the GNSS status does the same.

  3. If you connected before the receiver had a position, tap Disconnect GPRS and then Connect GPRS again.

The X-PAD help does not say whether X-PAD also needs Connect GPRS with External GPRS (controller). If the status stays on Autonomous with that option, tap Connect GPRS.

AUTO needs your position. The AUTO mountpoint chooses the base station from the rover position, which reaches the caster as NMEA GGA. Without a position, the receiver logs in but receives no corrections, see NTRIP & GGA Essentials. The X-PAD help documents no GGA switch, so start Connect GPRS only after the receiver has an autonomous position. If the Correction status icon does not blink, or Age corrections stays empty or keeps rising, tap Disconnect GPRS and then Connect GPRS.

10

Wait for RTK Fixed

Stay outside with open sky and check the solution as described in How do you know RTKdata corrections are really arriving in X-PAD? below.

Is the GS11 set up like the Leica GS18 in Captivate?

No: Leica names Leica X-PAD as the field software for the GS11, not Leica Captivate (September 2026), so you connect the GS11 to RTKdata in X-PAD as described on this page, and the Captivate steps on the Leica GS18 & GS16 page do not apply. Neither the GS11 product page nor the Hexagon X-PAD portfolio page mentions Captivate. Leica describes its software lines this way: "Leica Captivate stands for maximum capability across any surveying project, Leica iCON focuses on construction workflows, and Leica X-PAD is the solution for a select set of everyday routine tasks."

Where does the GS11 get internet: its own 4G modem or the controller?

The GS11 gets internet for RTKdata corrections either from its own 4G modem, which Hexagon lists as an option ("with 4G and UHF options"), with Internal GPRS (receiver), or from the controller running X-PAD with External GPRS (controller).

  • External GPRS (controller): the iGage guide describes this route for its receivers: "Corrections are received by the Android device and passed through Bluetooth to the RTK head." The same guide warns that Android "may slow down X-PAD and break Bluetooth connections" when you switch to another app, and for Android 12 it recommends Unrestricted battery use for X-PAD under App info > Battery settings. The labels differ between Android versions, and the transfer to the GS11 and the CSX8 is our conclusion.

  • Copy your RTK credentials before you start, so you do not have to switch apps during the survey.

  • Internal GPRS (receiver): Leica has not published whether the GS11 takes a physical SIM or an eSIM, or which mobile bands it supports; check with your Leica dealer. If the receiver modem does not connect, try External GPRS (controller) as a cross-check.

  • Some mobile carriers block port 2101, see Troubleshooting & FAQ.

  • After changing an Internal GPRS profile: X-PAD configures the receiver from the profile. If the receiver still behaves as before, run GNSS Status > Tools > Configure receiver, which the X-PAD help describes as "used to reconfigure the GNSS receiver using the current instrument profile". Settings > GNSS > Configure always GNSS receiver "enables the complete reconfiguration of the receiver with the current profile at each connection".

Which settings does RTKdata need on the X-PAD RTK GPRS page?

On the RTK GPRS page, RTKdata needs an NTRIP Server of your own with Mode set to NTRIP, the regional host in IP, 2101 in Port, your RTK credentials in UserID and Password, AUTO in Mountpoint, the RTCM 3 MSM option in Format Data and RTCM3.1 messages off.

  • The X-PAD help describes IP as the "IP address where the service answers". The iGage guide says the field takes "either an internet address or dotted numerical address"; that guide covers X-PAD with iGage receivers, and a hostname in IP is not documented for Leica X-PAD with the GS11. Enter the hostname first and keep the IP fallback for your region ready.

  • If a Network type field appears: the X-PAD help says it is "available only for certain models". It is not documented for the GS11, so this page gives no value for it; ask your Leica dealer.

  • Add prefix to reference station only adds a prefix to the reference station name in the points database and is optional.

Correction format. RTKdata streams RTCM 3.2 with MSM4 messages (1074, 1084, 1094, 1114, 1124, 1134) and 1005. Leica has not published a GS11 data sheet with the supported input formats. The X-PAD help recommends "RTCM3 MSM format" for multi-constellation receivers and says of Format Data: "Set the same data format sent by permanent station (source)."

How do you know RTKdata corrections are really arriving in X-PAD?

RTKdata corrections are really arriving when the GPS Status page shows RTK Fixed under Position, Age corrections stays low and the Correction status icon in the GPS Status panel blinks; the X-PAD help: "If the icon is blinking, the corrections are received."

Open the GPS Status page from the main toolbar, or tap the panel in the survey and stakeout windows. The X-PAD help also calls this page GNSS Status.

  • Age corrections is the "delay in receiving corrections in seconds. A high value indicates missing reception of corrections."

  • NTRIP Server should show RTKdata and Mountpoint should show AUTO.

  • GSM Signal shows the mobile signal level.

  • Stuck in RTK Float under open sky: Tools > Reset RTK resets the received RTK corrections and forces the receiver to re-initialize the position.

  • Points are not stored although the connection works: check Settings > GNSS. Store only in Fixed stores epochs only in a fixed position, and with RTK age check on, corrections must arrive within Max age (secs). The iGage guide calls "a value from 4 to 10" reasonable.

Which coordinate system should you use with AUTO in X-PAD?

With the RTKdata AUTO mountpoint, set a coordinate system in the X-PAD job that matches the regional datum AUTO delivers at your position, for example NAD83(2011) in the USA or ETRS89 in Europe, and leave RTCM3.1 messages off in the NTRIP profile.

  • AUTO delivers your region's datum, chosen from your GGA position: for example NAD83(2011), epoch 2010.0, in the USA; NAD83(CSRS)v7, epoch 2010.0, in Canada; ETRS89 (realization ETRF2000), epoch 2010.0, in Europe; and GDA2020, epoch 2020.0, in Australia. For regions not listed, AUTO falls back to WGS84(G2139) at the mid-year epoch. The datum for every region is listed in Coordinate Systems & Datums.

  • AUTO_ITRF2020 and AUTO_ITRF2014 deliver ITRF2020 and ITRF2014 at the current epoch, and AUTO_WGS84 delivers WGS84(G2139) at the mid-year epoch.

  • Set the projection, datum and geoid in the X-PAD job, not in the NTRIP profile. The NTRIP profile only describes the incoming corrections.

  • Leave RTCM3.1 messages off. The X-PAD help says: "RTCM3.1 can only be used with CORS network providing these messages." The RTKdata stream carries MSM4 and 1005, no transformation messages. With RTCM3.1 messages off, RTCM3.1 mode and Process RTCM1025 are not shown.

  • Heights are ellipsoidal. Apply a geoid in the job, see Understanding Heights. X-PAD localization packages can contain geoid models; install one under Settings > Miscellaneous with the Install button next to Localization package.

  • A consistent offset of 50 cm to 1 m against local survey control usually means a datum mismatch, see Why Your Coordinates May Be Offset.

  • While you move, AUTO can hand off to a closer station; this is expected and not an error.

When can you use tilt compensation on the GS11?

Use tilt compensation on the GS11 only after the GPS Status page shows RTK Fixed with RTKdata corrections: the X-PAD help says that "if the GNSS accuracy is low or receiver is not fixed, IMU solution is not available".

Both GS11 variants have tilt compensation, according to Leica. The following steps come from the X-PAD help for GeoMax receivers with an IMU; Leica has not documented how the GS11 IMU behaves in X-PAD.

  1. Wait for RTK Fixed.

  2. Turn on tilt under Settings > GNSS > Sensors mode with Tilted pole (GNSS receiver), or tap the IMU icon and select Tilted pole. The help advises to face the receiver front panel first, for the correct walking direction.

  3. Initialize: "Wait until the GNSS receiver is fix and then start to walk and move the GNSS receiver".

  4. Until the IMU is ready, the icon shows states such as Not initialized, Tilt with low quality, Magnetic calibration required or GNSS quality low. GNSS quality low points to the RTK solution, not to the IMU: check the correction link first.

  5. Tilt check with Max tilt (°) under Settings > GNSS rejects positions above the tilt angle you set.

Frequently asked questions

Does the Leica GS11 work with Leica Captivate?

Leica names Leica X-PAD as the field software for the GS11, not Leica Captivate (September 2026), so the RTKdata NTRIP setup for the GS11 runs in X-PAD. The GS11 product page says the GS11 "is designed to work with Leica X-PAD", on an Android tablet or smartphone or on the Leica CSX8, and neither this page nor the X-PAD portfolio page mentions Captivate. For the Captivate setup of the GS18 T, GS16 and GS07, see Leica GS18 & GS16.

Is there a Send GGA switch in Leica X-PAD?

No such switch is documented: the X-PAD help shows no GGA setting on the RTK GPRS page or in the NTRIP server entry you create for RTKdata. RTKdata still needs your position for AUTO, so start Connect GPRS only after the receiver shows Autonomous, and check that the Correction status icon blinks and Age corrections stays low. If not, tap Disconnect GPRS and then Connect GPRS.

Can I use the GS11 without a SIM card in the receiver?

Yes: with External GPRS (controller) on the RTK page, the RTKdata corrections come over the internet connection of the controller; the X-PAD help describes this option as "use of the GPRS modem of the device (controller) or the Internet connection of the controller". The CSX8, phone or tablet then needs mobile data or a hotspot, and X-PAD should be allowed to run in the background. Hexagon lists 4G only as an option for the GS11, so we conclude that this is also the route for a GS11 without the 4G option.

Why does X-PAD stay on Autonomous although the NTRIP profile is correct?

Usually because the RTKdata connection was never started or the profile is not active: tap Current for the profile under Instruments and then GNSS Status > Tools > Connect GPRS. Other causes are a connection started before the receiver had a position (use Disconnect GPRS and Connect GPRS), the wrong option on the RTK page, or no internet on the route you chose.

Can I edit a preinstalled NTRIP server in X-PAD instead of adding RTKdata?

No, create your own server for RTKdata with NTRIP servers... > + Add instead. Localization packages can preconfigure NTRIP servers of other services, and rented equipment can come with a server entry whose password is hidden. Such an entry keeps its own host and mountpoint, so your RTKdata login fails or uses the wrong stream.

Quick reference

  1. Activate X-PAD with a license that includes GNSS, and decide on the internet route: 4G modem in the GS11 or the controller's internet.

  2. Settings > GNSS & Total stations > Add > GNSS Receiver (GNSS), Profile name RTKdata, Mode GNSS Rover, Brand and Model, then the GS11 on Device.

  3. RTK: Internal GPRS (receiver) or External GPRS (controller). For internal GPRS: Provider with APN Server and PIN.

  4. RTK GPRS: Server type NTRIP, NTRIP servers... > + Add, Name RTKdata, Mode NTRIP, IP rtk.rtkdata.com, eu.rtkdata.com or aus.rtkdata.com (IP fallback 13.56.117.10, 3.73.41.96 or 54.206.56.130), Port 2101, UserID and Password from RTK Credentials, Accept.

  5. Mountpoint AUTO, Format Data RTCM 3 MSM, RTCM3.1 messages off, Use GLONASS, Use GALILEO, Use BEIDOU on, antenna Height, Accept.

  6. Instruments: select the profile, Current. Outside, wait for Autonomous, then GNSS Status > Tools > Connect GPRS.

  7. Check RTK Fixed, a low Age corrections and a blinking Correction status icon. Then turn on Tilted pole (GNSS receiver) if you need tilt.
